The Wedding Cake (plus how to make black royal icing)

So... the big day finally arrived.  I'm not talking about the wedding day, I'm talking about the day before, which revolved around decorating the wedding cake!
 
The colour theme for our wedding was very simple; red, white and black. White fondant? Easy! Thanks to theCake Ornament Cowhich supplies pre-made white chocolate fondant. Red? I decided to go for the non-edible kind of red detail, also known as "ribbon". Much easier to get an exact colour match! But black royal icing for the piping was a little harder to do.
