Did you know that carrots never used to be orange?? I found some purple carrots in our local grocery store a while ago and decided to throw caution to the wind and buy some. Yes - I like to live on the edge. According to the source of all knowledge (Wikipedia), orange carrots were introduced in the 17th century. There are also purple, red, white and yellow varieties. Apparently the purple carrots have a higher level of something that's really good for you, so why not put them in a cake? |

So tell me who's seen this picture floating around the internet and thought "mmmm... I bet they'd taste good"? Well I thought that same thing and decided to take action! I have included my favourite chocolate chip cookie recipe for everyone to try. The recipe I have is a double mix, so feel free to halve it, but trust me they'll be so popular, you'll be needing to make double just to keep up with everyone who wants one! I've been having kind of a hard time writing a blog, solely about cakes. Because lets face it; while cakes are delicious and scrumptious, they're not completely all-consuming when it comes to life. My life is certainly cake-y, but I do lots of other stuff too. So here's where you get to know me a little better! I grew up with a love of food and baking. Both my parents liked to cook and my Mum makes an unsurpassed chocolate sponge cake. And for me, the taste of chocolate sponge (with whipped cream and chocolate icing) always evokes memories of family gatherings and special occasions and arguing with my siblings over who got to eat the middle piece. |

A couple of weeks ago, a good friend of mine asked me to make a Bender cake. "You've done one before, right?" was the question. Hmm... now that you mention it, I haven't. But, I do love a challenge! So I started off by checking we were talking about the same thing. Could you imagine how embarrassing it would've been if I'd made a cake that looked like a cartoon robot and he was actually talking about a pile of empty alcohol bottles (as in; "man, I'm still recovering from Saturday night's bender"). |

For anyone who has been keeping track of such things, you may notice I haven't been posting a blog lately. Just shy of three months in fact! And here's the thing. It's not that I haven't been thinking of you. It's not even that I don't have any musings I'd like to share (lord knows I probably share a little TOO much!). But the forces of technology have been conspiring against me to prevent me sharing my little snippets of wonderment (ha!) with you. |

So... the big day finally arrived. I'm not talking about the wedding day, I'm talking about the day before, which revolved around decorating the wedding cake! The colour theme for our wedding was very simple; red, white and black. White fondant? Easy! Thanks to the Cake Ornament Cowhich supplies pre-made white chocolate fondant. Red? I decided to go for the non-edible kind of red detail, also known as "ribbon". Much easier to get an exact colour match! But black royal icing for the piping was a little harder to do. |

Wedding cakes are fun. It's fun planning and designing them and fun seeing people's faces when they see the finished result. Planning your OWN wedding cake is slightly nerve-wracking. Because, you see, you have intimate knowledge of the dietary habits of the wedding cake eaters. "Uncle Frank* doesn't like fruit cake, cousin Susan* is lactose intolerant, Great-aunt Enid* is very traditional and thinks we should save a cake layer for the first baby... except we've already three (babies, not cake layers), cousin Gerald* is diabetic, and 3-year old niece Samantha* is only eating orange things at the moment. |

A while ago I got an email asking to share a favourite recipe - it was like one of those money tree things - you know; send money to the first person on the list and forward it to three people - except this recipe idea was WAY more fun and less financial risk! **Insert shame-faced confession here** I didn't actually send a recipe, so by way of apology to my sister, here's my fave recipe of the moment, to share with everyone! It's a Tupperware recipe, and works fantastically well with their products, especially the 1 Litre Jug which I use in the microwave ALL THE TIME! |

Organisational skills – those mythical abilities we all purport to have (especially in résumés) but which sometimes elude us. I have always believed my talents for organisation, while not perfect, were adequate to cope with the chaos I affectionately call my life. In the last few weeks, my illusions have been shattered. Like a champagne glass being moved from old house to new house, in a box with not enough packing paper. Did I mention I just moved house? I started packing boxes the morning that four friends turned up with trailers. |

Did you ever feel as if the universe was speaking to you? Sending you a sign? I always thought this was a load of rubbish BUT I had a very unusual revelation the other day. It was particularly unusual because the universe chose to send me a message through the medium of a car's vanity license plate. I was driving along, minding my own business, and (just quietly) bemoaning the fact that even though I am WELL past puberty, my skin doesn't realise that it's a bit ridiculous for me to be getting a pimple, smack bang in the middle of my chin. |
